Pankhurst in the Gallery

As part of the Wonder Woman* festival 2015, we are pleased to announce that on Thursday 26th March 2015 Alexandra Arts will be ‘taking over’ Thursday Lates at Manchester Art Gallery to present Pankhurst in the Gallery, a free event for all ages and genders.

Our Holy Creatrixxx infused Pankhurst in the Gallery will celebrate the life and work of Emmeline Pankhurst. Inspired by Manchester Art Gallery’s fashion collections, the event will explore the Suffrage movement in terms of activism, image and empowerment.

People will be invited to dress up – take inspiration from the Suffragette colours of green, purple and white or even the gallery’s collections. Or simply rock up as you are and join in at the adornment making station.

The evening includes a showcase and sale of artworks from this year's Pankhurst in the Park's International Artist in Residency Go! Push Pops and their final performance Holy Creatrixxx. We have limited edition screen prints of Katarzyna Jablonska's portrait of Emmeline Pankhurst, and signed photo books by Pablo Melchor and Zuza Grubecka. This will be topped off with a performance by Naomi Kashiwagi and a screening of our video artist portrait of Go! Push Pops. Expect funky tunes and slashes of neon!

Pankhurst in the Gallery will take place from 5.00pm – 8.00pm, Manchester Art Gallery.

*Wonder Women is back. From Cornelia Parker to the Pankhursts, No More Page 3, Sarah Hardacre, The Unthanks and Kim Kardashian, Manchester’s feminist festival returns throughout 1-31 March. Over 35 organisations across the city are taking part, with debates, music, art, cinema, gigs, bike tours, exhibitions, football, live literature, pub quizzes and much more shining a light on some of the incredible, creative and campaigning women working in Manchester and Salford today.

#AlexParkMCR Opening Celebration 2014
Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st August

Alexandra Art presents 'Pankhurst in the Park'

With a helping hand from the Celebration committee; our Arts Council funded program 'Pankhurst in the Park' will kick off with Alexandra Arts taking part in the official opening weekender of the newly restored Alexandra Park, on the 30-31st of August.

Our program will take place from 2pm-8pm on Saturday and from 3pm-5pm on Sunday, you can find us under the tree canopy in the Park's little woodland. Between the Lime Avenue and the North oval, nearest entrance is Range Road/Alexandra Road South.

In line with the heritage of the Park, our Speakers Corner will make a return. Here we have programmed an array of local speakers & performers, we are delighted to be working with Young Identity, Cultureword and it's artistic director Peter Kalu; Who is renown for discovering, developing and promoting Asian, African Caribbean and Chinese spoken and written word talent. Also represented here is the Pankhurst Centre, Whalley Rangers and the Moss Side Community allotment, to mention a few. Here Alex Arts award-winning Artist Naomi Kashiwagi will do an back drop installation for this space and a Gramophonica (Pankhurst Remix); a live gramophone glitching on a wind-up gramophone turntable against the naturally bedazzling backdrop amongst the trees. She will play the 78rpm shellac record, ‘It always rains before the rainbow’ sung by Vera Lynn that will be re-appropriated with electrical tape in the Suffragettes colours. These colours are white for purity, green for hope, and purple for dignity
See the the Speakers Corner schedule here- https://alexandra-arts.squarespace.com/new-blog/2014/8/27/speakers-corner-30-31st-of-august-2014

On site you will find our bicycled powered cinema, with a day time dj set by The Mighty Quinn and a early dusk soiree, where we will be screening a short documentary by emerging Artist Katarzyna Jablonska. Alexandra Art have recently commissioned Miss Jablonska to do a portrait of Emmeline Pankhurst, specifically for the 'Pankhurst in the Park' program. This area will have an installation by Artist Lotte Karlsen
